"As a patent attorney, I have the opportunity to help multinational companies, start-ups, universities and schools, as well as inventors, to protect their inventions and advise on IPR matters. It's great when I get to work with a client to create an IPR strategy for them and I can help them grow the value and business of the company through IPR. I enjoy being able to use my knowledge of both science and IPR law in my work."

Gustav joined Laine’s chemistry team in 2023 as a European patent attorney, handling assignments mainly related to chemistry and biotechnology, in particular organic and medicinal chemistry.

Gustav has been working in the IPR sector since 2017. Prior to that, he worked as a researcher for about 15 years, including as a Team leader and Responsible investigator at the Drug Discovery-group of the Division of Pharmaceutical Chemistry and Technology at the University of Helsinki. He has also worked in South Korea at Seoul National University (2015). In addition, Gustav has supervised several PhD students, he has been a member of several PhD committees and he has been a reviewer of applications to the European Research Council, among others. Both the Finnish Society of Sciences and Letters and the University of Helsinki awarded Gustav the Young Researcher’s Award in 2016.

Gustav holds a PhD in Pharmaceutical Chemistry (University of Helsinki, 2011) and a Master’s degree in Organic Chemistry (University of Helsinki and York University (UK), 2003).

Gustav is also actively involved in association activities. He is, for example, a Finnish deputy member of epi (term 2023-2026), a member of the Association of Finnish Patent Attorneys (SPAY), the Finnish Chemical Society, and the Finska Kemistsamfundet – Suomen Kemistiseura (FKS).

In his spare time, Gustav enjoys golf – he plays whenever he has the chance. He also likes to exercise, for example by going to the gym and jogging. He has played actively football, floorball and volleyball. He also enjoys spending his free time with his friends.
